What does hypnosis feel like?
One question I get asked a lot is - What does hypnosis feel like?
Most people assume it’s like some kind of zombie trance or the type of thing you see in Scooby Doo cartoons where the mad professor says some magic words and Shaggy ends up with spirals in his eyes.
Hypnosis is actually natural to all of us, and it’s something you would have experienced in your own life on a daily basis. Yes, that’s right - every single day!
Think about when you’re watching an amazing movie, and you’re so completely absorbed in the storyline that it consumes your entire focus. Somebody could walk in the room and call your name, but you wouldn’t even hear them. THAT’s the kind of hypnotic trance I’m talking about - you already know how to do it really well! You drift off to a place where your surroundings and your everyday world is forgotten and you become fully immersed in a self-created reality.
There are many other examples I could give you - daydreaming, meditating, getting lost in a good book. Or - that moment when you’re driving the car and you suddenly realise you have no recollection of the last 5 minutes of your journey! Sounds familiar? Don’t worry, we’ve all done it! You've got lost in a thought and the conscious part of you has drifted off for a time and allowed your unconscious, autopilot part of you to take over and keep you safe.
Hypnosis feels really pleasant - think about that drifting, drowsy feeling you experience just before you fall asleep. Everything is a little bit softer, a little bit more muted. You become less aware of your surroundings and background sounds, you’re just drifting in a comfortable, blissful, dreamlike place. And once you’re in this place literally anything and everything becomes a possibility!
Hypnosis has a lot in common with our REM sleep - that part of our sleep where our imaginations are firing off, creating amazing dream worlds. Hypnosis isn’t sleep - but it’s a bit like being able to access REM when you’re not asleep. By allowing me to guide your imagination when you are immersed in this highly focused attention, it’s possible for you to create amazing changes in your reality, because your conscious, thinking mind is sidelined for a while and isn’t around to object or debate! The positive suggestions pass through to your unconscious, autopilot part of you much more easily.
Therapeutic hypnosis is a really pleasant and enjoyable experience for most people. It’s not like when you see a stage hypnotist slam-dunking their volunteers into hypnosis. It’s a much more gentle and enjoyable process - you can think of it like a spa day for your mind!
I want everyone who comes through my door to have an enjoyable experience of hypnosis, and to come back feeling refreshed, renewed and with a sense that they have just experienced something life changing. Almost always, the first words out of someone’s mouth at the end of their first hypnosis session are “Wow! That was so weird!” This is because they have been on an amazing journey into their imagination, and coming back to the waking world can often take a few minutes to adjust to!
We all have a slightly difference experience of hypnosis because we all imagine things differently. It’s an experience that’s often hard to describe but one thing’s for certain - it’s one you’ll enjoy and want to repeat again and again!
