Living with ADHD can sometimes feel like your brain is running in a hundred different directions at once. Staying focused, starting, finishing or changing tasks, switching off at night, or even just finding moments of stillness and calm can often feel harder than it “should” be. And on top of that, it’s easy to slip into self-criticism or frustration when things don’t go as planned.
The truth is, ADHD comes with many amazing strengths, including creativity, energy and unique ways of seeing the world. But when the challenges start to take over, hypnotherapy can be a powerful way to find more balance and control. Here are some of the ways I can suuport you:
Focus and Concentration
It's a common misconception that people with ADHD find it impossible to focus and concentrate. The truth is, they can hyper-focus when it comes to activities that are enjoyable to them - but it's the mundane or less interesting tasks that can cause their inattention or distractibility.
In our sessions, I work with you to strengthen your ability to access your quiet inner world and help you stay present. Hypnotherapy can make it easier to tune out distractions and focus on what really matters, so tasks don’t feel quite so overwhelming.
Moving Past Procrastination
Procrastination can feel like a constant battle to people with ADHD; executive dysfunction often impacts their ability to get started on tasks and affects their time management. Lower dopamine levels in the ADHD brain can often lead to uninteresting tasks being avoided while more exciting distractions win out. Hypnotherapy can help ease the resistance that keeps you stuck and replace it with motivation and momentum - so getting started begins to feel more natural.
Calming a Busy Mind
ADHD often brings with it a mind that never stops racing. Hypnotherapy can help you find ways to slow things down, tune into your body and create a sense of calm without losing your spark or creativity.
Building Self-Esteem
Many people with ADHD carry a lot of self-doubt and can often feel “not good enough.” RSD (Rejection Senstivity Dysphoria) is common - a feeling of intense emotional pain caused by perceived failure or criticism. They may have repeated experiences of failure, criticism or misunderstandings about their condition. And their tendency to procrastinate the less appealing tasks means they are sometimes mistakenly labelled as 'lazy' either by others - or by the self-critical voice in their own head. Hypnotherapy helps you rewrite that inner dialogue, so you are reminded of your inner strengths and can feel more confident, capable and proud of who you are.
Encouraging Better Sleep
Sleep issues can be common with ADHD, including difficulty falling and staying asleep and poor quality sleep, while disrupted circadian rhythms can mean the person with ADHD may feel more awake at night, resulting in staying up late followed by daytime fatigue and low mood. A restless mind at night can make sleep feel impossible, but hypnotherapy gives you tools to quieten your thoughts and tune into a feeling of comfort, making it easier to drift off and wake up refreshed the next day.
A Common Myth About Hypnotherapy
You might be wondering - how can I benefit from hypnotherapy if I struggle to relax or sit still? This is a question I get asked a lot by my ADHD clients! In fact, many of them tell me straight up that they hate relaxing. Here’s the good news though: hypnotherapy doesn't require you to be relaxed or to remain perfectly still with your eyes closed. In fact, sessions can be active, engaging and even playful. I may keep sessions a little shorter than standard but you will always play an active role in creating your own hypnosis experience, so there's no time to get bored! What matters most is your willingness to enter into sessions with a sense of curiosity and a keenness to learn new ways of doing things.
Finding Support That Works for You
Hypnotherapy can't change who you are fundamentally - but it can help you make life with ADHD feel a little easier, calmer and more enjoyable. If your ADHD sometimes leaves you feeling stuck or exhausted, this could be a gentle and effective way forward.
